It has a brownish breast, blue vent and crown. It has a sky blue tail and purplish lilac neck and throat. It’s a long billed bird with curved upper edge and hooked tip.
It forages singly or in pairs. Suddenly and frequently it swoops down to the ground to pick up insects from tree-stumps, stakes, hedges or wires. It mainly feeds on crickets, grasshoppers, beetles etc. and this way it does a great service for agriculture. It also feeds on frogs, mice and lizards.
It has variety of sounds and particularly loud and demonstrative during courtship display. Their reproduction season is between March and July. It makes a nest with grass, straw, rags and puts it in the hollow of any rotten tree trunk or brunch. Female bird lays 4-5 eggs in a normal clutch which are pure white, glossy and roundish oval.
It mainly forages on the open areas and agricultural lands. They are commonly seen in Southeast Asia.
